Reading Comprehension for ESL Students: A Step-by-Step Method

A 5-step reading comprehension framework that turns any English article into a CEFR-graded lesson in under 10 minutes.

Reading comprehension is the highest-leverage ESL skill. Master it, and your students will independently consume English forever. Here’s a 5-step framework that works for any text — a news article, a song lyric, a short story.

Step 1: Pre-reading vocab dump

Scan the text. List 8–12 words that will block comprehension. Pre-teach them. Don’t skip this — most reading failures are vocabulary failures.

Step 2: Skim for gist

Set a 60-second timer. Students skim for the main idea. They write ONE sentence: "This is about ___." This locks in the topic before they get lost in details.
